Trip to Nairobi

Today we took our first daytime drive into the capital of Kenya, Nairobi. There's a saying here that in America they talk about the weather, but in Kenya they talk about the roads. And I believe them! Even though our driver, Fred, drove slowly and carefully, we still tilted and jumped at every turn. Speed limits here are also more like suggestions than a hard-and-fast rule. Once in the city, I felt like everyone was moving like they were already late. It's a marvel how much industry and business is compacted into what seems like a handful of city blocks. The level of commotion was seemed to dwarf that of cities like Seattle or Portland. One peculiar omission from the city seemed to be the homeless. Our driver said this can partly be due to the fact that Nairobi is during the day largely filled with commuters (a sentiment many of our own cities share). But one way or another, there's no hiding the fact that there exists a large poor population here. We know, because we can see Kibera every day we wake up.

  1. Jambo! We are both so happy that you have all arrived safely, and thrilled you have started up the blog so quickly. It will be like a mirror for us into another world so unlike our own Northwest. We did spot your approximate location on mapquest, and saw the temperatures would be in the 70's, which is exactly what ours will be later this week. It's in the 60's right now. Will you be visiting hospitals, and business sites this week? Sounds like the Brothers are providing a very comfortable base for you. It's in sharp contrast to what those in Kibera wake up to. I read they are trying to upgrade Kibera, and I wonder how that is going when there is unstable land under it. Looking forward to your insights and candid comments on your venture. You are always in our thoughts.
